Welcome to the website for the Gleeson Clan Gathering!

Our Next Gathering:
August 19-24, 2016
Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, Ireland

We have a fabulous Programme of Events lined up for you this summer and the Gathering has already generated a huge amount of interest both locally and internationally, from Gleesons and non-Gleesons alike.

The Gathering has several complementary aims and objectives:
1) to assist both Local Irish & Diaspora Irish in the pursuit of their ancestry, particularly in relation to their Gleeson ancestors
2) to unite Local & Diaspora Irish and foster collaboration amongst them in their genealogical research
3) to imbue Local & Diaspora Irish with a deeper understanding of their shared ancestry, heritage & culture, and to highlight the important role that various Gleeson individuals have played in local, national, and international events of both historical and cultural importance
4) to celebrate what we have today, informed by what happened yesterday, and looking forward to what we can build tomorrow

Everyone is welcome to attend! You may be a Gleeson, or have a Gleeson ancestor, or know a Gleeson, or just want to be a Gleeson for a weekend ... no matter! Everyone is welcome. And the more the merrier!

You don't even have to spell it Gleeson. It could be Gleason, Glezen, Glisson, Glissane, O'Glasáin, O'Gliasáin, and any one of many more spelling variants.

We will have a large local contingent in attendance as well as many international visitors. A big Thank You goes out to everyone who has expressed an interest from the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

The principal organisers – Michael Gerald Gleeson, Dr Maurice Gleeson, Margaret O'Sulliva, Betty Gleeson and Nora Gleeson O'Meara - have tried to choose the most suitable time of the year for the majority of people attending. Therefore August was chosen as the best time to host the Gathering in order to take full advantage of the Irish summer: the days will be long with a grand stretch in the evenings (daylight until 10pm) thus allowing an extension of outdoor activities. And the evenings will (hopefully) be balmy - average August temperatures are 19°C (66°F) during the day and 12°C (54°F) at night. And with a bit of luck we might even see a bit of sunshine.

Summer is a busy time in Ireland and consequently most of the tourist attractions will be open (many close for the winter months). We even considered and avoided clashing with the All Ireland Hurling Final (4th September) which hopefully will see Tipperary worthy winners!

The Gleeson Clan Gathering 2016 is scheduled to run in and around Nenagh, North Tipperary, from Friday 19 August to Wednesday 24 August inclusive. The organisers are busy liaising with government and community organisations to produce a great historical, social, and cultural event. Costs have been kept to a minimum, and most of the activities and events are free (thanks to the huge generosity of local people), but there will be small fees to cover the costs of renting the venue, refreshments, etc. Information about arranging your trip, including accommodation and transport, can be found on our Planning Your Visit page.

We look forward to welcoming you in person to the Gleeson Clan Gathering 2016!

  3. Thanks Maurice. Sorry I have taken so long to action this. Life has been a madness of selling property/moving/ buying and trying to get over a dreadful 'zombie' bug that has laid me flat for several weeks. Onwards and upwards. Shirlee.
